Perl => PHP

January 25, 2007 at 6:03 pm | Posted in perl, php, programming, ruby | Leave a comment

I found a really great site for converting perl functions into php. When learning languages it’s easy to pick things up when you have a foundation. Just like learning any other language it’s a matter of finding the common occurances and building from there. EX: How do you say “Hello World in French translates to how do you echo “Hello World” in Ruby (puts “Hello World”). I think if I could find something similar to this to convert from PHP to Ruby I would become a RUBY GOD! Maybe I’ll write one…that would be good practice.

Music Buffet

January 22, 2007 at 4:21 am | Posted in music, music genome project, pandora | 3 Comments

While digging around for music to code by this weekend I stumbled back upon an old favorite. I love when you discover something on the internet. Whats even more fun is when you RE-discover it. I loved playing around with Pandora back in my datacenter days. Nothing could cure the mind numbing mainframe jobcard writing better than discovering new music.

Well I fired it up again this weekend and had a blast. I quickly put together a good trance / upbeat station merging a few of my favorite bands and settled in. Pandora’s really neat in the way it works. It takes songs or artists you like and based on the music genome project creates a playlist that fits the similar characteristics of the music style you choose. For example I could put in “They Might Be Giants” and I may get a couple of great TMBG tunes but I also get some Eels tunes or something by Chin Up, Chin Up. I can give it feedback like telling it what I like and what I don’t like. The interface is really slick and I never run out of music to listen to. It’s great because it runs in flash it’s platform independant. You can “mininmize” it into a small managable window.

Overall this is a really great way to discover new music and bands you may not have heard. And because it’s the music genome project it does a pretty good job of matching your tastes. It even has some text that goes along with each track explaining how that band or song fits in with your original choice. Give it a spin, you won’t be disappointed.

I signed back up into World of Warcraft. Probably a HUGE mistake. I kissed my remaining free time goodbye. Some friends back in Sarasota are playing and it would be cool to group up with them. We’ll see how long this lasts this time.

5 things

December 21, 2006 at 10:49 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 2 Comments

So my boss over at his blog decided to tag us with a 5 things meme. Sooooo the gist is I need to post 5 things that most people don’t know about me. Heeeeere we go:

1. I have two middle names. On most of my documents it’s just the one but on my birth certificate there are two. My full name is Trevor John William Griffin. My parents wanted to name me Trevor John but that was my dad’s father’s name. So as to not upset the other side of the family they threw William, the name of my other grandfather in there.

2. I have a birthmark on the back of my head that makes my blonde hair black. Normally hair that grows out of birthmarks is blonde or white but mine is black which makes a weird looking black mark on the back of my head.

3. I am deathly afraid of spiders. I hate them…absolutely….actually I hate ANYTHING with more than 4 legs. Especially if said legs are long and spindley…..blech.

4. I have a strange facination with trees. I like being around them. I won’t live in a place without at least one tree nearby. I like staring at them…sitting next to them…everything.

5. I have no formal education. I have held many professional positions that usually require a few years of schooling to attain, however I am a highschool graduate. I’ve never done well in a classroom environment and learn more in practice doing things and getting my hands dirty than I do any other way. I’m currently a developer for a company, but prior to that I was a CTO, a DB analyst, a system admin, a datacenter automation specialist, and PC repair technician. I’ve built an internet service provider from scratch (dialup) when I was 20 and pretty much have done everything in between and all of it self taught.

Well there it is! I’ll post the people I tag when I get them :)

Sunday, December 03, 2006 – Fat guy fails

December 21, 2006 at 1:59 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 Comment

Ok, so we’ve moved to Orlando. Mary’s gone back to Sarasota to clean the apartment tomorrow and I was bummed out, missing her, and tired of packing.

I decided to take a little afternoon jaunt over to Islands of Adventure. There’s a ride there called Dudley Doright’s Ripsaw Falls. Up until today it had been one of my favorite rides in the park.

They recently overhauled the ride and put in some new seats. They are bascially covered with this rubbery foamy stuff and it makes seating……a little tighter.

I decided I wanted to ride this today and that I would see if my big butt could fit. I got into the back which looked like it had the most room and attempted to sit down. The way these boats work is that they are shaped like logs hollowed out. You sit inside this “tub” and sit astride this ridge running down the center. The seat backs basically seperate you from the person in front of you but your legs run around them.

I straddle the ridge and go to push myself into it. It’s a snug fit but I get in. I quickly check to make sure I can get out. *CHECK* no problem.

So the ride takes off and I’m enjoying myself. My legs are getting a little crampy and it’s a little hard to breathe but I’m doing fine. Well we get to the big drop at the end and I feel myself get shoved down into the seat further by centrifical force.

We get to the unload area and I attempt to get out and quickly discover….I CAN’T!!! Some water had splashed into the boat and I couldn’t get ANY traction. I’m scrambling trying to get out desperatly but my fat ass is WEDGED and it isn’t going anywhere.

I desperatly tell the ride attendant that I couldn’t get out.She stops the ride and tries to give me a hand but she’s small and there’s no way. She gets on the phone and is on it for a while. Meanwhile the boats behind me start stacking up with people waiting to get off the ride.

She comes over and assures me someone will be along to help. Meanwhile I can hear sickers from the people in the boats behind me when they realize the reason they aren’t moving is because the fat guy in front of them can’t get out.

They’ve now STOPPED the ride, and we were waiting for someone from tech services to come help. They guys finally arrive and both of them try to give me a hand by pulling me out. No good, I’m wedged tight. So finally they decide they are going to send the boat back to the maintenance area and get me out in there so that the ride can continue. I start off there and soon I’m swallowed up into the underbelly of the ride. Disassembled boats scatter the area around the little track running in there.

The tech explained that to get me out they would have to remove the seat in front of me. But before they could start they had to wait for health services to make sure I was ok. So now we have 2 techs and 2 paramedics from health services. I was fine just a bit cramped and a little panicked on how I was going to get out.

So finally the tech starts disassembling the seat. A couple of the nuts he has to remove are up near my “nuts” and so the poor guy had to put his hands all up in my business. Obviously uncomfortable, our conversation switches to “guy stuff” working on cars etc. This whole ordeal started at about 4:20pm. by the time we removed the seat (which included removing 8 bolts and cutting the rubber off the back) it was about 6pm. This poor guy was practically doing headstands to get to where he could see and remove the bolts holding the seat in.

Total time in boat: 1:45 minutes
Total techs on the scene : 5
Total techs doing work : 1
Total “other staff” on the scene : 5 (2 customer relations people, 2 paramedics and the ride attendant.)

It was my own stupid fault. None on thier end really. The customer relations people were falling all over themselves to give me something for my inconvince. I assured them there would be no lawsuit and would sign something to that effect. Overall it was an interesting situation, I got to see a part of the park that people generally don’t and I have an interesting story to tell.

Oh, and I know I need to lose some weight before attempting *THAT* again. Although the space is kinda tight and I think that skinny people might have some difficulty with it.

Tuesday, November 28, 2006 – I hate cardboard.

December 21, 2006 at 1:58 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

I hate cardboard.

So the move presses on. We’ve found a place in Orlando (still waiting to hear yea or nay on it, should hear today), it’s awesome and only 5 miles from work.

Booked the movers for Saturday, kick ass rate.

My new bosses are some of the coolest people I’ve met (and haven’t met yet).

My new work setup is INSANE…30″ friggen monitor and a Macbook baby.

Yeah, I’m going Mac, I *MIGHT* be back…but I doubt it.

I still hate packing.
